Why Your AC Runs Constantly in Apollo Beach
When it's 95 degrees outside in Apollo Beach, your AC is going to run a lot. That's normal. But if it never shuts off — running continuously without reaching the temperature you set — something is wrong. Here are the six most common causes, in order from "fix it yourself" to "call us."
1. Dirty Air Filter
This is the #1 cause and the easiest fix. A clogged filter restricts airflow so badly that your system can't move enough cold air to satisfy the thermostat. Pull the filter. If it's gray and matted, replace it. In Florida, change it every 30 to 60 days during summer.
Fix it yourself: Replace the filter. If the system starts cycling normally within a few hours, that was it.
2. Thermostat Set Too Low
Your AC is designed to cool your home about 20 degrees below outside temperature. When it's 98 outside and you set the thermostat to 68, the system physically can't get there — so it runs all day trying. Set it to 74-76 and see if it cycles.
Fix it yourself: Raise the thermostat to 75 and give it 2 hours.
3. Dirty Condenser Coils (Outside Unit)
Your outside unit dumps heat into the air. If the coils are caked with dirt, grass clippings, or pet hair, it can't release heat efficiently. The system runs longer to compensate.
Fix it yourself: Turn off the system. Gently rinse the outside unit with a garden hose (top down). Clear debris from around the unit — it needs at least 2 feet of clearance.
4. Low Refrigerant (Leak)
If your system is low on refrigerant, it can't absorb enough heat from the air inside your home. It'll run constantly but barely cool. You might also notice ice forming on the copper lines or the indoor coil.
Call a pro: Refrigerant doesn't "run out" — if it's low, there's a leak. This requires a licensed technician to find, repair, and recharge.
5. Undersized System
If the AC has always run constantly — especially since you moved in — the system might be too small for your home. This happens when the original installer cut corners on the load calculation, or when you've added square footage.

6. Failing Compressor
If the system is 10+ years old and gradually losing cooling capacity, the compressor may be wearing out. It runs but can't build enough pressure to cool effectively. You'll also see higher electric bills over time.
