When to Repair vs. Replace Your AC in Florida

This is the question we get asked most. Your AC breaks, the repair quote comes in, and you're wondering: should I throw more money at this thing or just replace it? Here's the framework we use with our own customers — no upselling, just math and common sense.

The 50% Rule

This is the simplest rule and it holds up well. A new system for most homes in Apollo Beach runs $4,000 to $8,000 installed, depending on size and efficiency. If you're facing a $2,500 compressor replacement on a 12-year-old system, the math says replace.

The Age Factor

AC systems in Florida have a shorter lifespan than in cooler climates because they run so much harder. Here's what we see:

• Under 8 years: Repair. The system has a lot of life left.
• 8 to 12 years: Depends on the repair. Minor repairs, yes. Major component failure, start thinking about replacement.
• 12 to 15 years: Unless it's a small, cheap repair, you're putting money into a system at end of life. Lean toward replacing.
• 15+ years: Replace. You're also probably running R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer manufactured and extremely expensive.

The R-22 Question

If your system uses R-22 (Freon), it's time to plan a replacement. R-22 was phased out in 2020. The refrigerant that's left is priced like gold — $100 to $200 per pound. If your system has a leak and needs a recharge, you could spend $500 to $1,500 just on refrigerant, and it'll leak again.

How to check: look at the data plate on your outdoor unit. If it says R-22 or HCFC-22, that's the old refrigerant. Modern systems use R-410A or R-454B.

The Energy Bill Test

Compare your summer electric bills year over year. If they're climbing steadily while your usage hasn't changed, your system is losing efficiency. A new high-efficiency system (16+ SEER2) can cut cooling costs by 30 to 50% compared to an old 10-SEER unit. That savings adds up fast in a state where you run AC 10 months a year.

The Comfort Test

Is your house comfortable? If some rooms are hot while others are cold, if it takes forever to cool down, or if humidity is a problem even with the AC on — these are signs the system is either undersized, worn out, or was poorly installed. A new system with proper sizing and installation can fix all of these.
